Rowrrr a.k.a. The Monster Car is my 4th artcar. It is a 2006 Scion xA. (Finally paid off!)
I've been making artcars since the 90s. I began with my first car which was a Mitsubishi Mirage that I bought after signing my teaching contract. I was so proud to finally have a car! While I was still paying on it, I saw artcars at Artscape for the first time and that was it...I knew what I had to do. At first I had no idea how to make an artcar. I had no plan, no designs, and no clue. I began by gluing little toys to the roof. The rest is history.
F.A.Q.s
1. What kind of paint do you use? Does it wash off?
I use One Shot Sign Enamel. It seems to be the standard among artcar folks. Stinky, oil based, and a pain to use for people who are not used to it, nothing works better for a glossy bright finish.
2. How long did it take you to paint your car?
This one took 3 months. I recently repainted it (since One Shot no longer contains lead, the colors fade a bit faster).
I also finished painting the inside.
3. Are you an artist? Is your car advertising something?
No, I'm a special educator. I have no formal artistic training other than the hours I spent doodling in school (much to the chagrin of many nuns). My car is not advertising anything in particular. It is just incredible fun to drive.
4. Do you take your car to Artscape?
I used to go to Artscape every year and it was fantastic fun. There were loads of artcars and I got to reconnect with people that I often didn't get to see but once a year. For a while it seemed that artcars were a big draw at festivals and a bunch of us did several events a year together. In the last few years I find that I can't deal with the heat, crowds, and noise of Artscape like I used to, and the people I knew the best are not coming anymore. I still miss it, but I don't miss the heat!
5. Why did you do it?
If you are asking me that, you will never understand why...
